PART 3 of MBA Series: One Year MBA: IIM AHMEDABAD v/s ISB HYDERABAD

India is definitely one of the high consumption markets for Management Education. It is no hidden truth that till date MBA degree from top Management Institutions is most sought after and highly valued and respected in the industry. We see thousands of candidates writing competitive Entrance Test for coveted MBA seat in the top institutions (See our latest post on Top MBA Examinations in India, Click HERE). University Grants Commission (UGC) states under University Grants Commission Act that Degrees can only be awarded by universities and institutes such as the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), set up by Parliament or legislatures, and those declared deemed-to-be-universities. All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) recognizes two year MBA/ PGDM courses and has been little reticent on One year MBA in India.

Needless to say, One year Management Program is relatively new in India and has to compete with old and more popular 2 year one. Some has even questioned its relevance on the grounds of learning and course delivery, stating that quality gets compromised when two year programme is truncated into one year. For now keeping critics at bay, let’s explore this high emerging format of Management Education.

If you are the one, who could not get into the top B school because of xyz reasons and dropped the plan to do full time 2 year program, God’s Angel has opened another avenue – 1 year Management Program. Entry to these One year program is through competitive written exam, in most of the cases GMAT®, CAT and/or Institute’s own exam. This program is generally focused for the candidates with work experience. No of years of work experience differ for each school.Outlook magazine has released the 2014 ranking of B-Schools in India with a section devoted to a ranking of the best B-Schools for a pursuing a One Year MBA course, though the magazine has clearly defined the parameters for its main ranking of Best B-Schools for two-year PGP/ PGDM courses, it is silent on the key criteria considered for ranking B-Schools for their one-year MBA courses.

For this article, we’ll use the Financial Times (FT) 2015 Global MBA Ranking and highlight the 3 institutes from India that featured in ranking (ranks), namely Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (26), Indian School of Business, Hyderabad (33) and Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore (82).

School Profile: The Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIM Ahmedabad or IIM-A) is a publicbusiness school located in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. It was the second Indian Institute of Management (IIM) to be established in India after IIM Calcutta. It is consistently ranked as one of the best business schools in India and the Asia-Pacific region.

PGPX Details: PGPX is a one-year, full time residential programme for executives with substantial work experience leading to a One Year Post-Graduate Diploma in Management for Executives. The first batch of PGPX was started in 2006 and is currently running its tenth batch. The design of PGPX is built on IIMA’s well-established experience of designing and running post-graduate management programmes for exceptionally bright students and a wide range of executive education programmes for practicing managers from many countries. PGPX students are selected through a rigorous admissions process that includes GMAT (www.mba.com), leadership profiling and personal interviews. The programme takes into account the substantial and varied experience the selected executives bring to the classroom. The objective of the programme is to develop bright, enthusiastic and high-initiative executives into management leaders and change agents in the global arena. The programme has a general management focus, including an emphasis on managing across borders and cultures. It has an international project (called International Immersion) besides teaching content drawn from many countries.

 

Batch Statistics:For 2015-16 PGPX Batch, 1151 registrations were made, out of which 459 applications were received. 236 applications were invited for interview and 85 were admitted the programme. Batch has 16 female students and 3 International Students. 70 are the Engineers out of which 15 are IIT or NIT graduates. Average GMAT score is 705. Average age is 33 years 8 months. Average work experience of the batch is 9 years 6months. Maximum students come from IT and IT Services work experience background.

Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGP)

 

School Profile: Indian School of Business (ISB) a private business school in Indiawith campuses at Hyderabadand Mohali (New Campus commenced operations on April 14, 2012). It was established in 2001. The school was founded by two senior executives of McKinsey & Companyand is governed by a board comprising both Indian and non-Indian businessmen. ISB has been ranked 33rd in the world in the 2015 Financial Times Global MBA Rankings.ISB is the first business school in Indian subcontinent to be accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business.  ISB is not accredited by the Indian statutory body, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). ISB has chosen not to apply for accreditation by AICTE as it offers neither a diploma nor a degree. In 2008, ISB became the youngest institution to find a place in global MBA rankings when it was ranked 20.

PGP Details: The Post-Graduate Programme in Management (PGP) is a one year, full-time residential programme. The applications for the programme are on the lines of any best International Management programme in the world. To be eligible for admission to ISB, you need a Bachelor’s degree in any discipline. Preferably two years of full-time work experience after graduation. Exceptional candidates, with less work experience, will be considered for deferred admission. A valid GMAT score and TOEFL / IELTS / PTE score, only if language of instruction during undergraduate education was not English. There are no such standard Selection criteria but Institute looks for Leadership Potential, diversity, academic background and analytical ability. The Post Graduate Programme (PGP) at ISB is rigorous. The one-year duration makes it even more challenging. But rest assured, it’s one of the best Management programme being offered in India.

Batch Statistics:For the class of 2015, 763 students have been admitted to the PGP programme at ISB. Batch consist of 30 percent female students, females 231 (30%) Male 532 (70%) students. Age with mid 80 percent range falls in 25-31 age group, with mean age for the batch is 27 years. GMAT score with mid 80 percent range falls in 680-750, with mean and medium score of 711 and 710 respectively. Work Experience with mid 80 percent range falls in 2.8- 7.5 years. Average work experience of the batch is 5 years. On the professional background, 75 percent of the class consists of Engineers and 25 percent as non- engineers. Batch also had International students (Non-Indian passport holders) and strength of the same is 9.
